38. Dad Walking Home

I could see Dad walking home across the firebreak after work, from the hospital where he was the head janitor. He made $19 a month, the same as the doctors. People who were responsible for others were paid the highest, which was $19. The average worker was paid $16, and the lowest pay was $12. I waited for him, and looked forward to his coming home. Once he was able to bring home a small carton of frozen milk, and another time an orange juice for us to share.
