08. We Are Americans


We were Americans, but we looked like the Enemy. They gave us a number, and we had to wear tags on ourselves and our bags. We were only allowed to take what we could carry by hand. (Left to Right) My dad, Yutaka Joe Sugita, 58; Osamu Sam Sugita, the youngest son, 13; Toru Tee Sugita, the middle son, 16; Iwao Roy Sugita, the eldest son, 20; Chizuko Judy Sugita (me, the youngest-- Mom died when I was a baby), 9; Nobuko Lillian Sugita, 18; and Mariko Frankie Sugita, 11 years old.
